Arsene Wenger has identified Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain as the most significant threats to Arsenal’s Champions League ambitions this season.
The former Arsenal manager believes these two European giants pose the biggest danger from outside the Premier League.
Wenger made his comments following another strong week of European action.
Arsenal continued their perfect start to the tournament with a convincing 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague, marking their fourth consecutive win.
On the same night, Bayern Munich also maintained their 100% record by securing a major 2-1 away win against PSG.
Speaking to beIN Sports, Wenger explained his reasoning. He stated that both Bayern and PSG have such dominance in their domestic leagues that their primary focus for the season becomes the Champions League.
With the French and German titles all but secured, these clubs can channel their energy into European success.
“I would say they’re the two teams who can win the Champions League this season, outside England,” Wenger said.
“Their season of course will be in Europe. They will have to fight against the five teams in the Premier League, that will be very interesting.”
Wenger did acknowledge that PSG currently appears not to be at their best, while he described Bayern Munich as being “in full power.”
His analysis was supported by former Premier League striker Troy Deeney on CBS Sports.
Deeney also placed Arsenal, Bayern, and PSG in a top tier of contenders, suggesting that Bayern’s victory in Paris strengthens their case, though Arsenal’s impressive form and eight consecutive clean sheets make a compelling argument for them too.
As the group stage progresses, the potential knockout round clashes between these European heavyweights and the powerful English clubs promise a thrilling conclusion to the competition.
