It was the Frenchman who first signed Ramsey from Cardiff over a decade ago and developed him into the prime central midfielder that he is today.
One of the key decisions that Wenger failed to address during his final season with the Gunners was to sign the Welshman to a new contract even after facing heavy turmoil with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
While Sanchez was allowed to leave for Manchester United in exchange for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Ozil was handed over a £350,000-per-week deal set to last till the summer of 2021.
This led to heavy speculation regarding Ramsey’s future as well since the 28-year-old had only a year left in his contract. Eventually, the burden was passed on to Unai Emery and that ended in a disaster for the Gunners.
One of their most influential and versatile attacking midfielders is destined to bid farewell this upcoming summer while Arsenal are stuck paying Ozil a boatload of cash every week. Wenger told the Daily Mirror, “In the case of Ramsey, it’s not a question at all of [running down his] contract, not at all,” said the former”
“I think it was not a financial situation and not a desire of the player to leave. But, as long as I was there, I was convinced that the player would stay. What happened after, I don’t know. It was not a financial problem, not a desire to leave problem.”
