When Mikel Arteta was appointed as the Arsenal boss, he had asked David Luiz to “step up”.
And so far, it seems as though Luiz has been fulfilling his wishes and has indeed stepped up and improved.
David Luiz has faced a lot of backlash since he came to Arsenal last summer and his performance dipped even lower under Freddie Ljungberg who served shortly as the interim manager after the sacking of Unai Emery.
However, when Arteta took over, he took on Luiz in the starting XI and since then, has been happy with how Luiz has responded to him.
‘Yes, that’s what I wanted to demand of him,’ Arteta said about Luiz being a mentor for young players.
‘He is a player that has won more trophies than anybody else in that dressing room.
‘We have to use that in a very powerful way. I wanted him to step up, I wanted him to put all his qualities, his personality and his experience, towards the team and he made a big step forward.
‘I am very, very pleased with him. Is he becoming more consistent?
Arteta wants to take Arsenal higher up the Premier League title – with the Gunners lying 10 points below the leaders (Liverpool) and 9 points away from getting a Champions League spot.
