Mikel Arteta plans summer overhaul at Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is gearing up for a summer shake-up as reports suggest he’s eyeing Athletic Bilbao’s rising star Nico Williams.
The Gunners, currently vying for the Premier League title, are eager to bolster their attacking options, with Arteta willing to part ways with underperforming duo Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah.
Despite Nketiah’s status as joint-second top scorer for Arsenal, his tally of five goals in 21 Premier League appearances leaves much to be desired. Similarly, Smith Rowe, with just one assist and two starts under his belt, has failed to make a significant impact.
In contrast, Williams has caught Arteta’s eye with his impressive displays for Athletic Bilbao, contributing six assists and three goals in La Liga this season. The 21-year-old winger’s flair and creativity could provide much-needed competition for Arsenal’s existing attacking options.
However, the Gunners face stiff competition for Williams’ signature, with Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Aston Villa also expressing interest.
Moreover, negotiating with Athletic Bilbao, known for their staunch stance on player transfers, could prove challenging, with the club likely to demand payment of Williams’ release clause.
Arteta is also reportedly monitoring Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, potentially as a replacement for Thomas Partey if the Ghanaian midfielder is offloaded.
As Arsenal prepares for a summer overhaul, Arteta’s pursuit of Williams underscores the club’s ambition to strengthen its attacking prowess and compete at the highest level.
