The latest reports claim that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be flying to Italy to complete a last-minute move to AS Roma.
The Armenian international, who has fallen well below the club’s pecking order, commands a huge wage bill. He signed with Arsenal 18 months back and so far, the investment has not paid off.
After the arrival of Nicholas Pepe and promotion of Reiss Nelson in the first team, Mkhitaryan has become excess to Unai Emery’s needs. The 30-year-old was never consistent either, failing to replicate the form he once showed for Borussia Dortmund.
His performance was poor even in the North London derby on Sunday, being brought on to impact the team’s attack as a substitute. He seems to be a misfit on the wide positions and his more prefered central posts are now covered by the likes of Dani Ceballos and Mesut Ozil.
Unai Emery is trying to build a new team, which is much more younger and better suited to his style of play. That would require sending out all the veteran players left behind by his predecessor.
Nacho Monreal was already shown the door for a switch to Real Sociedad and now, Mustafi and Mkhitaryan is expected to follow suit. Moving them out of the club’s wage books will be a huge boost.
