Atletico Madrid have shortlisted Alexandre Lacazette as they look to add another striker to the mix this January.
Edinson Cavani is their top target but there is no guarantee that the South American will PSG midway through the season.
If a move for Cavani fails, Atletico would like to have Lacazette leading their front line. The good news for them is Arsenal are interested in one of their players as well – Thomas Lemar. Reports claimed that the Gunners were looking to hand Lemar an escape this winter through either a loan or a permanent deal.
Lemar’s prospects have not worked out at the Spanish capital with Diego Simeone ready to do away with the €60m signing. The winger was originally a transfer target of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and was even valued at €100m. The Frenchman ended up not moving to the Emirates but has a second chance of doing so.
The question is whether Mikel Arteta will allow Lacazette to leave. He has started each of Arteta’s 5 games in charge, playing a crucial role in pressing the opponent and creating an attack. Lacazette’s work rate and output under the new manager has been lauded by many.
Given how Arsenal is set up now, it would be difficult to imagine an attacking force without the 29-year-old. Also, Arsenal are not in a position to take risks on attacking positions. They are falling short in quality in defence and should prioritise adding that to their squad ranks instead of Lemar.
