A motivational text from Arsenal legend Thierry Henry helped set the stage for Bukayo Saka’s milestone performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over West Ham, propelling the team to the top of the Premier League.
The morning of the match, rising star Saka received a brutally honest message from the club icon.
“Thierry messaged me this morning to remind me that we lost the last two games to West Ham at home,” Saka revealed after the game.
This reminder of recent disappointments against their London rivals served as a powerful motivator for the young winger.
Saka clearly took the message to heart. During the game, he converted a penalty to secure the win after Declan Rice’s opening goal against his former club.
This goal held special significance, as it meant Saka equalled a record set by Henry himself, becoming only the second Arsenal player to score on his 200th appearance for the club.
“He is always pushing me,” Saka said of Henry’s ongoing influence.
“I think he wants me there with him, so it’s nice to have that encouragement from him.
Of course, me, I want it as well, I’m really happy to have my name on these records”.
The 2-0 result broke a frustrating pattern for the Gunners, who had lost their two previous home matches against West Ham without scoring.
Manager Mikel Arteta heaped praise on Saka for his incredible journey and output.
“The numbers he is creating are incredible at his age – so much more to come from him,” Arteta stated.
He also celebrated the team’s resilience, noting the ability to “go top of the table after some big fixtures over the last week and some injuries” was a significant achievement.
The victory temporarily sent Arsenal to the summit of the league table, a position they held after Chelsea defeated Liverpool later in the day.
For Saka, the win demonstrated the team’s progress, successfully avenging past stumbles and strengthening their title ambitions.
