Football is a game of fairy tales. It is for the common man to escape the brute force of reality and be swept away by the touch of magic.
Many stories are inspiring enough to doubt reality and that is what the DNA of the game breeds. One such story is that of Santi Cazorla.
One of Spain’s finest midfielders, Cazorla was unfortunate to be born in the generation of Spain’s greatest midfielders ever which included the likes of David Silva, Iniesta and Xavi to name a few.
Hence, he was never really a regular in the national team let alone a leader. It however, it did not stop him from weaving his magic at Arsenal where on days he was the heartbeat of the Arsenal team.
Disaster struck when he suffered a career ending injury. The doctors told him, “you’d be lucky if you can walk”.
But football is stronger than reality right?
You bet. Cazorla not only recovered to walk but play again. And played he did beautifully. So much so that he got a call up to the national team and it ended with him leading a champion national team.
Wearing the armband is another dream fulfilled for me,” Cazorla said (via Marca). “I’m enjoying this a lot, but the important thing is for me to help the team.
“We knew it’d be difficult because of the pitch and that they were going to close us. But we were better in many aspects of the game and we’re happy.”
We bow to you, Santi. You are inspiration.
