Former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas has thrown his support behind Leandro Trossard to replace Martin Odegaard in the upcoming north London derby against Tottenham.
Fabregas Calls for Trossard to Step Up in Arsenal’s Midfield vs Spurs
With Odegaard sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained during international duty, Fabregas believes Trossard could step up in the Gunners’ midfield in this crucial fixture.
Arsenal face the challenge of missing several key players, with Declan Rice suspended and Gabriel Jesus, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Mikel Merino also struggling with fitness concerns.
Odegaard’s absence, however, will be particularly felt, as the Norwegian playmaker has been instrumental to Arsenal’s success this season.
Despite these setbacks, Fabregas has confidence in Trossard’s ability to fill the creative void.
Speaking on the Planet Premier League podcast, Fabregas acknowledged that Trossard, traditionally a winger, possesses the necessary skills to operate in a more central, attacking role.
“I’m certain that if Mikel starts him or brings him on during the game, it’s because he’s seen the potential for him to make an impact,” Fabregas said on the Planet Premier League podcast.
“With Rice and Odegaard unavailable, it speeds up the decision, but it’s clear that he’s already in Arteta’s thoughts. If he’s part of the squad, it’s because the manager truly believes he can contribute.
“I’d also love to see Trossard in midfield. Although he usually plays on the wing, he has the skills to take on Odegaard’s role – more of an attacking midfielder, in the number eight or ten position.
“I believe he’s capable of that. If I’m not mistaken, Partey and Jorginho will likely be the other two midfielders.”
The Belgian has already proven to be a reliable figure for Arsenal, scoring the winner earlier this season against Aston Villa.
Fabregas also hinted that the teenager Ethan Nwaneri could feature, but he suggested that the magnitude of the derby may make Trossard the more reliable option.
“I think Mikel [Arteta] trusts him to make an impact,” Fabregas said of the Belgian international.
As Arsenal prepare for one of the season’s biggest matches, all eyes will be on Mikel Arteta’s team selection.
With Odegaard out, Fabregas’s recommendation could influence how the Gunners approach a game that could have significant implications on their title aspirations.
