Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has delivered a strong verdict on Mikel Arteta’s future at Arsenal, insisting the Spaniard should step aside if he fails to win a major trophy in the 2025/26 campaign.

John Mikel Obi: Arteta Should Walk Away If Arsenal Fail to Win a Trophy Next Season

Arteta pointed to Arsenal’s growing maturity as key factor for title race

Arteta, who is heading into his sixth full season in charge at the Emirates, has overseen a remarkable transformation in Arsenal’s playing style and overall competitiveness.

Under his leadership, the Gunners have become a genuine force in the Premier League, recording back-to-back title challenges and earning praise for their fluid, attacking football.

However, the glaring absence of silverware continues to hang over Arteta’s reign.

Since winning the FA Cup in 2020, Arsenal have fallen short in the biggest moments, often stumbling when it matters most. That lack of tangible success is now becoming a concern for both fans and pundits alike.

Speaking to TalkSport, Mikel Obi didn’t mince words: “They’re solid, they’re playing well, the defence is good, the midfield is good. I think he has built a solid team, but is he the guy to take them to the next level?” he questioned.

“The next level is winning the Premier League and the Champions League. Sometimes, a fresh voice is needed. He’s had five, six years – give him one more.”

The Nigerian went on to say that if Arteta fails to deliver next season, it might be best for both parties to part ways.

“If he doesn’t do it, I think for his sake it is better to just walk. Then he is not the guy to be able to do it. Get someone new, get someone fresh.”

As Arsenal prepare for another high-stakes season, the pressure is undeniably mounting on Arteta. With a talented squad and all the right tools in place, the margin for error has narrowed.

For many, the 2025/26 campaign will define whether Arteta is truly the man to lead Arsenal back to the top.
