As Arsenal top the Premier League, the form of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori is the primary reason academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly has yet to start a league match this season, according to former Premier League striker Darren Bent.
Darren Bent: Calafiori’s Brilliance Key to Lewis-Skelly’s Limited Arsenal Minutes
Despite being highly rated at the club, the 19-year-old England international has been limited to substitute appearances in the Premier League, often brought on to see out games.
Bent emphasizes that this is no reflection on Lewis-Skelly’s talent, but rather a consequence of Calafiori’s exceptional performances.
Bent explained that Lewis-Skelly’s limited game time is simply due to fierce competition for the left-back position.
“The only reason why he’s not playing for Arsenal at the minute is because Calafiori has been incredible,” Bent stated on talkSPORT.
This analysis aligns with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s recent comments on squad selection.
When discussing young talents like Lewis-Skelly, Arteta explained that playing time depends on a combination of current form and specific tactical needs for each match.
Lewis-Skelly’s role this season has largely been from the bench. His league appearances have come in manageable home victories or brief cameos to close out tight games.
However, his potential is undeniable. In a previous analysis, the Premier League’s official site highlighted that Lewis-Skelly possesses a 96.3% passing accuracy and excels in an inverted left-back role, where he moves into central midfield to support attacks.
Teammate Declan Rice has also praised the teenager, saying, “He can go to the top, this kid is just special, very special”.
While Calafiori currently holds the spot, Bent’s outlook for Lewis-Skelly remains positive.
With a long season ahead and multiple competitions to contest, Arsenal’s squad depth will be vital in their pursuit of silverware. Lewis-Skelly is expected to get opportunities to play as the season progresses.
For now, the young defender is a testament to the increased strength and quality within Arteta’s squad, as the Gunners look to maintain their strong start to the campaign.
