David Moyes has labelled Arsenal’s Declan Rice as “probably the best midfield player in the world” following his dominant performance in the Gunners’ 1-0 victory over Everton.
The former West Ham manager, who coached Rice for several years at the London Stadium, made the bold statement after watching his current Everton side narrowly lose at the Emirates on Saturday.
A first-half penalty from Viktor Gyokeres secured the three points for Mikel Arteta’s league leaders, but Rice’s commanding display in the engine room captured the spotlight.
Moyes specifically highlighted the challenge his own midfielder, Tim Iroegbunam, faced against Rice.
“He was up against probably the best midfield player in the world in some ways and he did a really good job,” Moyes stated, praising his player’s effort while acknowledging Rice’s superior quality.
The Scottish boss was quick to share credit for the 26-year-old’s continued rise, emphasizing Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s influence.
“Mikel has made him into a real, real top player,” Moyes said.
He also reflected on Rice’s innate talent and character, noting, “Declan was always going to be a great player… he’s a terrific boy.”
Arsenal’s manager echoed the high praise in his own post-match assessment.
Mikel Arteta described Rice’s contribution as “unbelievable,” specifically commending his leadership, ball recovery, and consistency. “What a massive player for us he is,” Arteta concluded.
The victory restores Arsenal’s two-point advantage at the Premier League summit, with Rice’s world-class form proving a cornerstone of their sustained title challenge.
