Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s admiration for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams is no secret.

David Ornstein: Nico Williams wants Pay rise to join Arsenal amid Arteta’s admiration

However, according to respected journalist David Ornstein, any potential move for the Spaniard hinges on several hurdles—including the player’s salary demands.

Williams, 22, has risen to prominence as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents. His standout performances at Euro 2024, where he helped Spain clinch the title, solidified his reputation as a dynamic attacker.

Yet, despite Arteta’s apparent desire to bring him to the Emirates, a January transfer looks unlikely.

Speaking on The Athletic FC podcast, Ornstein provided a detailed update on the situation, emphasizing Williams’ significant release clause and current contract at Athletic Bilbao.

The winger, reportedly earning €200,000 (£170,000) per week, is under contract until 2026.

While his release clause of nearly €60 million (£50 million) is steep, his salary expectations and lack of a desire to push for a move complicate Arsenal’s plans.

“Williams isn’t agitating to leave Bilbao,” Ornstein explained.

“For any deal to happen, he’d want an increase in salary, and suitors would need to pay the full release clause upfront.

It’s not a simple negotiation, and a January move appears off the cards—next summer feels more realistic.”

Arteta’s interest in Williams comes at a critical time for Arsenal. Injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka have left the Gunners short-handed in attack, exposing a lack of depth and consistency in front of goal.

While Williams’ statistics this season—one goal and three assists in 17 La Liga games—may not leap off the page, his pace, creativity, and ability to thrive in a cohesive attacking unit align perfectly with Arteta’s vision.

For now, however, Arsenal’s focus might shift to more affordable options, with Botafogo’s Igor Jesus emerging as a potential target.

At just £16.5 million, the 23-year-old offers versatility and value, making him a more attainable option in the winter window.

As for Williams, Arsenal fans may have to wait until summer to see if Arteta can secure his services—and meet his financial expectations.
