Premier League side Arsenal could swoop for Diego Costa as a free transfer this month.
Diego Costa, the former Chelsea striker who just became a free agent, might make a surprise return to the Premier League, according to sources.
Costa is now without a club after choosing to end his contract with Atletico Mineiro after six months, and the Gunners have been linked with a surprising bid for their old opponent.
The former Atletico Madrid striker has been linked with transfers to Turkish, Qatari, and Chinese teams, but he has yet to make a definitive choice on his future club.
Costa’s goal in the 2017/18 Europa League semi-final eliminated Arsenal, and he scored three goals in six Premier League outings against them while at Chelsea.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his front line in the January transfer window, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in exile at the club and presently competing in the Africa Cup of Nations, and Folarin Balogun on loan at Middlesbrough.
Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both out of contract in the summer, and they have combined for a mere three league goals this season.
Signing Costa, 33, would be a short-term solution, but with the striker being available for free, it may be a win-win situation for both the club and the player.
The Gunners are said to be prepared to offer Costa a short-term contract until the end of the season, with the possibility of a 12-month extension.
