Eddie Nketiah has quite the reputation in the Arsenal academy.
His old teammate, Billy Gilmour thinks the 20-year-old has what it takes to become the world’s best strikers.
It has been quite the rise for Nketiah this season. First, gaining some reputation on his loan to Leeds United, the Englishman returned in January to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting XI at the Emirates. He even got picked over Alexandre Lacazette on several occasions, much of it owing to the latter’s poor scoring form.
Nketiah showed potential with a few neat finishes, especially the equaliser in the 3-2 Premier League win over Everton. He is yet to firmly plant himself into Arteta’s future plans but for now, the signs will make him optimistic. Gilmour reflected on just how much Nketiah has improved as a player after enjoying more playing time.
“Eddie has improved so much,” Gilmour said. “He was very good in the early days, but he’s phenomenal now. The progression he’s made in just three or four years is unbelievable and I believe he can be one of the best strikers in the world. He can be whatever he wants to be. His finishing is clinical, he loves scoring goals and he has the selfish instinct that all good strikers need to have.”
The statement might still be premature, given how little we have seen of Nketiah. There are several areas of his game which he will need to improve quickly to even be considered as a genuine starter in North London. However, he is young and is progressing well.
