Emmanuel Petit backs Arsenal after Vinicius Junior rejects Summer move

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has labelled the club’s failure to sign Vinicius Junior as a fortunate outcome, questioning whether the Real Madrid winger’s mentality would have suited Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal pursued the Brazilian star during the summer transfer window, reportedly offering a club-record contract and reaching an agreement on personal terms.

However, Vinicius ultimately chose to remain in Spain, leaving the Gunners empty-handed in their quest for a marquee left winger.

The club instead signed Christos Tzolis, a move that initially disappointed many supporters following the departures of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli.

Petit, however, believes Arsenal avoided a potential dressing-room disruption.

“I think Vinicius Junior is a really talented player, but in terms of his mentality, I am not sure he is a good fit for Arsenal,” Petit told reporters.

“I see so many humble players at Arsenal. If you suddenly bring in someone completely different, it can be a problem, especially with Arteta’s style of management.”

The Frenchman pointed to Vinicius’s recent confrontation with Jose Mourinho during Real Betis’s match against Real Madrid as evidence of a concerning attitude.

He also referenced the winger’s ongoing battles with criticism from fans, media, and social media, suggesting Vinicius sends the wrong message in pressure situations.

“I would have loved to see a player with Vinicius Junior’s talent play for Arsenal,” Petit added.

“But with his mentality and ego, I think it would have created a really difficult situation for the club to manage. He was probably a bullet dodged.”

While Petit’s concerns carry some weight, Arsenal themselves pursued the deal vigorously before Vinicius rejected their advances.

The club also failed to convince Julian Alvarez to leave his dream of joining Barcelona.

Tzolis has since impressed in victories over Chelsea, Napoli, and Coventry City, though Arsenal still require a world-class winger for the long term.

Whether missing out on Vinicius proves truly fortunate remains a matter of perspective.
