Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided clarity on the future of Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, following reports linking him with Premier League clubs Arsenal and Liverpool.
Fabrizio Romano Shares Update on Julian Alvarez Amid Arsenal and Liverpool Interest
Álvarez, who joined Atlético from Manchester City in August 2024 for a club-record fee of £82 million, has quickly become a key figure under Diego Simeone.
In his debut season in La Liga, the Argentine forward has netted 23 goals and provided five assists in 44 appearances, showcasing his adaptability and goal-scoring prowess.
Romano confirmed that while there was interest from Premier League clubs, Atlético Madrid are determined to retain Álvarez.
“Atletico Madrid absolutely want to keep Julián. There’s interest from Premier League, it’s true for sure, but Atléti insist on keeping him,” Romano stated in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter.
Atlético’s sporting director, Carlos Busero, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The talk about Liverpool submitting an official offer to sign our player Julián Álvarez is incorrect.
What is being circulated is just rumours. Álvarez is a key and important player in our project, and we have no intention of letting him go. The player himself is not paying attention to these rumours.”
Arsenal and Liverpool are both in the market for a prolific striker this summer.
Arsenal aim to bolster their attacking options after narrowly missing out on the Premier League title, while Liverpool are seeking reinforcements amid uncertainties surrounding Darwin Núñez’s future.
However, prising Alvarez away from Atlético would require a substantial financial commitment.
Reports suggest that any potential deal would need to exceed £100 million, a figure that reflects the player’s importance to the Spanish club and his impressive performances this season.
Given Atlético Madrid’s firm stance and Álvarez’s apparent contentment in Madrid, it appears unlikely that a move to the Premier League will materialize this summer.
Both Arsenal and Liverpool may need to explore alternative options to strengthen their attacking line-ups ahead of the new season.
