Emmanuel Petit believes Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has the potential to bring the Ballon d’Or to north London for the first time in the club’s history—but only if the Gunners finally get their hands on the Premier League trophy.
Petit: Rice Can Win Ballon d’Or – But Only if Arsenal Seal Title
Mikel Arteta’s side currently sit four points clear at the top of the table with just 12 games remaining.
They are bidding to end a 22-year wait for a league title, and Petit thinks success this season could open the door for individual glory for the club’s record signing.
“Declan Rice is potentially leading the race for the Ballon d’Or,” Petit told Ignition Casino.
“But don’t forget there is a World Cup at the end of the year.
I think that could be very important for him, but he and the Arsenal team definitely have to win something at the end of the season.”
Rice has been a revelation since his £105million move from West Ham in 2023.
The 27-year-old has anchored Arsenal’s midfield with consistency and authority, earning back-to-back PFA Team of the Year selections. He has also helped England reach two European Championship finals.
Despite his individual brilliance, Petit insists silverware must follow for Rice to enter the conversation for the game’s highest individual honour.
“He has been among the best midfield players for years now, but unfortunately, he has won nothing at Arsenal,” Petit added.
“If you want to be part of the greatest, you have to win titles.
It doesn’t mean anything if people recognize you as one of the most special players on the pitch, but you don’t win anything at all.”
No Arsenal player has ever won the Ballon d’Or. Thierry Henry came closest in 2003, finishing second behind Pavel Nedved.
Rice could change that narrative, but only if he helps the Gunners cross the finish line.
Arsenal return to action on Wednesday against bottom-placed Wolves before a massive north London derby on Sunday.
With a title race heating up and a World Cup on the horizon, the stage is set for Rice to cement his legacy.
