Arsenal have been dealt a huge transfer blow in their chase for former Academy youngster, Donyell Malen.
Reports claim Barcelona have taken notice of the striker’s talents and are ready to bid £50m for his services.
Malen has started out the 2019/20 season in outstanding form, scoring 10 in 9 Eredivisie games and 16 across all competitions. He dominated the scoresheet with all 5 goals when PSV Eindhoven thrashed Vitesse in September.
It has only been 2 years since Arsenal sold Malen to PSV for just over £200,000. At just 20 years old, he is also a Dutch international and one of the most exciting young strikers in all of Europe.
Of course, there is a vein of regret running down Arsenal’s spine but how far will they go to amend their mistakes? Barcelona are expressing a strong desire to sign the youngster as Luis Suarez replacement.
AC Milan are reportedly interested too but it is likely the Catalan giants could win the financial and status war. Suarez is due to turn 33 next January and there is no outright successor at Camp Nou.
Malen originally joined Arsenal in 2015 from Ajax and scored 27 goals in 67 appearances for the youth team. He left the Gunners when PSV expressed an interest and not for any contract disagreements.
The youngster revealed Arsene Wenger was eager to renew his deal but he wanted more playing time. Following his departure, he told the press, “That I was sent away from Arsenal is certainly not true. I still had a contract for a year and Arsenal even wanted to extend that.
“I don’t play football for the money. I never did that. Otherwise, I would not have left England.”
