Southgate defends decision to play Saka at Left-Back after dramatic win over Slovakia
Gareth Southgate has hit back at critics after deploying Bukayo Saka at left-back in England’s thrilling 2-1 extra-time victory over Slovakia in the Euro 2024 Round of 16.
The Three Lions narrowly avoided an early exit, thanks to Jude Bellingham’s last-minute equaliser and Harry Kane’s extra-time header, setting up a quarter-final clash with Switzerland on July 6.
The decision to place Saka in the left-back position came after Luke Shaw’s injury left England struggling for options. Despite Saka’s pre-match reservations about the role, Southgate felt his attacking prowess could provide a crucial edge.
The move materialized when Cole Palmer replaced Kieran Trippier in the 66th minute, pushing Saka into the defensive role.
Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, Southgate defended his tactical choice, stating, “Bukayo at left-back gave us an extra attacking outlet. It’s a good option to have. The courage shown by the players was fantastic tonight.”
Criticism of Southgate’s substitutions has been a recurring theme throughout the tournament, with some questioning his decision to keep Bellingham and Kane on the pitch despite visible fatigue.
However, Southgate stood firm, highlighting the impact of their contributions. “Harry and Jude looked out on their feet, but they delivered when it mattered,” he remarked.
“That’s why you stick with those players. They are capable of doing the sorts of things they did tonight.”
Southgate emphasized the importance of maintaining balance within the team and the strategic value of his substitutions.
“When people want changes, you’ve got to make sure they improve what you’re doing. I think pretty much all the changes we’ve made this tournament have had an impact.”
With the quarter-final against Switzerland looming, Southgate’s tactical acumen and the squad’s resilience will once again be put to the test.
