Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday evening was a significant boost for Mikel Arteta’s side, marking their second win in as many Premier League fixtures.
The win was a sweet reversal from last season’s struggles against Villa, where Arsenal had been outclassed and left without a goal.
Yet, amidst the celebration, a critical observation from Gary Neville has cast a spotlight on Gabriel Martinelli’s recent performance.
While the Gunners secured the win thanks to goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey, Martinelli’s display was far from stellar. The Brazilian winger, who has previously dazzled with his attacking prowess, had a relatively subdued game.
He managed just one successful dribble and registered two key passes, but failed to hit the target with his attempts and was dispossessed twice.
Neville, on his podcast, voiced his concerns about Martinelli’s current form. The former Manchester United defender and pundit noted that Martinelli appeared to lack the confidence that has characterized his play in the past.
“Gabriel Martinelli is not at his best right now,” Neville stated.
“He’s hesitating too much, opting for the safe pass instead of the bold runs we’re used to seeing.”
Neville pointed out that Martinelli’s hesitancy might stem from either a dip in personal confidence or potentially from tactical instructions that prioritize ball retention over direct play.
“It’s unclear if this is a mental block or if Arteta’s tactics are influencing him to play more conservatively,” Neville said.
“Martinelli thrives on instinct and pace, and right now, he seems to be second-guessing himself.”
The pundit also drew a comparison with Trossard, who made an immediate impact upon his substitution. Trossard’s influence and understanding of the position highlighted the gap in Martinelli’s current form.
“Trossard’s timing and positional awareness are something Martinelli might benefit from studying,” Neville suggested.
With Emile Smith Rowe also in the mix and Arsenal’s ambitions high, Martinelli faces increasing competition for his spot.
If the young Brazilian doesn’t regain his sharpness soon, he risks being sidelined as Arteta continues to push for top honors.
The challenge for Martinelli now is to rediscover the flair that made him a standout performer and ensure he remains a pivotal part of Arsenal’s exciting project.
