The Swiss international has been involved in heavy transfer speculation recently after yet another season of inconsistent performances in the Premier League. It is being claimed that Antonio Conte is pursuing a deal for Xhaka worth €40m and Arsenal are ready to pocket the sum.
After a disappointing loss to England in the United Nations League quarterfinals, the Switzerland captain was questioned on his future and the interests raised by the Serie A outfit, to which he replied, “Not that I know of. I have another four years on my contract, I only signed last year. I’m happy there, my family too. That’s the most important thing.”
The midfielder made 40 appearances last season and is so confident of his Arsenal future that he stated that he should be made the club’s captain. “It would certainly be the dot on the i,” he added.
Xhaka has been one out of 5 players to wear the armband last campaign, the other 4 being Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Laurent Koscielny. The former two are leaving Arsenal for good and both Ozil and Koscielny’s future at the Emirates is uncertain.
The only other senior figure who is capable of leading the side is Sokratis Papastathopoulos but he has been with the Gunners for only a year now. Despite Xhaka’s involvement in the captaincy race, it hardly matters in the long run. The player himself has not been exceptional on the pitch and if there is a chance to replace him with someone better, Arsenal should definitely take up that offer.
