Mikel Arteta had been struggling to find a suitable leader much like Unai Emery before him

Arsenal’s captaincy has been a major issue for the club in recent seasons. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the club’s captain at the start of the season, but he left for Barcelona in January following a falling out with his management.

Alexandre Lacazette took over as captain late last year, but the Frenchman is currently being benched in favour of Eddie Nketiah.

In his absence, Martin Odegaard has donned the armband, and former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp feels Arteta made the right decision.

“By bringing him into the team, they might have stumbled across a problem that’s caused Arsenal for a few years, the captaincy.”

“But giving it to Odegaard, it feels right for me. He may not be the most vocal but when you watch him play, he organises people, he plays the right pass. He’s a lovely player to watch.”

Odegaard, despite his young age, already captained the Norwegian national team and is one of the greatest leaders on the current Arsenal squad.

The midfielder has done an excellent job in recent weeks, and it’s difficult to argue that he shouldn’t be our permanent leader now.

Arteta will most likely select his new leaders before the start of the upcoming season, and it would be surprising if another player was chosen ahead of him.
