Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won the Premier League Golden Boot along with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane but he could have easily become the sole winner with 23 goals.
The Gabon international struck twice against Burnley to reach a goal tally of 22. In the second half, right after Burnley pulled one back, Aubameyang had a chance to complete his hattrick off of a tap in from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s pass.
To everyone’s shock, he missed the clear cut opportunity and came close to scoring a couple of times later as well. Alas, it was not meant to be and Ian Wright laid into the 29-year-old for such a blunder.
“This game he showed what he does when he is at his best,” the former Arsenal striker said. “When he is running in on goal, nobody is going to catch him and he is clinical usually. His first goal and his second, the volley, was fantastic. The technique to let it come over his shoulder was beautiful.
“He should have had his hat-trick but took the ball with the outside of his right foot and missed it from two yards out. I don’t know how he has missed it and the Golden Boot could have been solely his today. I was desperate for him to get it but it wasn’t to be.”
