Arsenal legend Ian Wright backs his former club to bounce back with a convincing win against Newcastle United this weekend.
The Gunners welcome Eddie Howe’s side to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday following two straight Premier League defeats.
Losses against Bournemouth and Manchester City have dented Arsenal’s momentum, but Wright believes his old team still has what it takes to produce a statement victory.
Speaking on The Overlap, Wright predicted a clean sheet and a comfortable margin.
“We’re winning this game, either 2-0 or 3-0,” he said.
“I think we have got that in us. We need that kind of result.”
Arsenal’s recent form looks worrying on paper. The team has won only one of its last five matches across all competitions, and that victory came through a last-minute goal against Sporting CP.
However, Wright sees signs of hope. The Gunners produced a strong second-half display against Manchester City last weekend, with Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes both hitting the woodwork. Kai Havertz also missed two excellent chances.
Newcastle arrives in north London in poor shape. The Magpies have lost three straight games and currently sit 14th in the league table.
That slump gives Arsenal a golden opportunity to get back on track.
History also favours the home side. Arsenal has beaten Newcastle in their last two meetings, both home and away. Wright expects that pattern to continue.
To ease the nerves inside the Emirates, the Gunners need a fast start. A goal inside the opening 20 minutes would settle the crowd and put Newcastle on the back foot.
The atmosphere during the Bournemouth loss felt flat, and the players need the fans behind them from the first whistle.
With five games left to play, Arsenal cannot afford more slips. Wright’s bold prediction puts pressure on Mikel Arteta’s squad, but the former striker clearly believes they can deliver.
