Former Arsenal striker and pundit Ian Wright did not hold back in his criticism of Arsenal’s approach in the final minutes of their 2–1 loss to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.
Ian Wright slams Arsenal’s “poor game-management” after Villa defeat

He said the Gunners’ players failed to manage the game properly at a crucial moment, costing them a hard-fought point away from home.
Arsenal had fallen behind to a first-half goal from Matty Cash, but bounced back after the break when Leandro Trossard levelled for the visitors. For large parts of the second half, the Gunners looked comfortable.
But as Villa chased a winner, Wright believes Arsenal should have switched gears. “Once we got past 85 minutes… and they brought on attacking players, to me that should have been the signal: shut up shop,” Wright said on Premier League Productions.
Instead, Arsenal kept pushing and left themselves exposed. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Emiliano Buendía pounced on a loose ball inside the box and fired home the decisive strike, sending Villa Park into raptures.
Wright added that when the opposition makes attacking substitutions, it should alert the defending side to adjust:
“That should have been the signal for us to take what we’ve got now and just get back to London.”
The defeat ends Arsenal’s 18-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, and while they remain top of the table, their cushion at the summit is now thinner — with rivals closing in.
With the title race heating up and little margin for error, Wright’s message to Arsenal was clear: know when to attack … and know when to protect what you have.
