Arsenal legend Ian Wright admits he remains disappointed with Viktor Gyokeres’ performances this season—but says all will be forgiven if the Gunners finally land the Premier League title.

Ian Wright Questions Gyokeres’ All-Round Game: ‘You Judge Him on Everything’

The Sweden international joined Arsenal from Sporting last summer in a £64m deal after scoring an astonishing 97 goals in 102 games in Portugal.

Yet the 27-year-old has managed just 13 goals in 32 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side, with only eight coming in the Premier League.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Wright did not hold back when assessing the striker’s debut campaign.

Asked whether Gyokeres has been a hit, miss, or maybe, the former Arsenal forward replied: “A maybe, a maybe. Fingers crossed for him, it’s a maybe right now.”

When former Manchester United defender Gary Neville pressed him on whether he is happy with the forward’s performance levels, Wright responded bluntly: “At the moment, not really, no.”

Wright stressed that goals alone do not tell the full story. “If we’re judging him just on goals… you can probably say yeah [he’s met expectations], but you judge him on everything he’s bringing to the team,” he said.

Not everyone shares Wright’s view. Roy Keane insisted Gyokeres has already proven a success. “I’m going to say hit,” the Irishman said.

“He’s doing what he’s supposed to do at Arsenal. By the end of the season he will be a hit.”

Gyokeres endured two significant goal droughts earlier in the season but has shown signs of life since January, scoring five times in his last eight outings. Arteta believes things are finally starting to click.

“His work ethic remains the same,” Arteta said ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Brentford.

“Probably the energy and confidence when you start to score and assist… you believe it will happen more often. Physically, after his injury, everything lifted. Now it’s clicking.”

Arsenal lead Manchester City by three points as they chase their first league title since 2004. For Wright, that is what ultimately matters.

“If he helps us get over the line, then we forgive everything,” he added.
