The North London side drew an embarrassing 5-1 defeat against Liverpool on Saturday and most of the fans were left pondering over the club’s obvious weaknesses. Wright shares the sentiments of majority Arsenal fans and admits that improvements are necessary.
In order to reinforce through the January transfer window or further down the line, the club might need to either sell or get rid of a few players according to Wright. After the loss, Wright said, “What that showed me is we need players, there’s three or four players in that starting lineup that should be moved on or farmed out because we need to start to progress. Hopefully, that result will start to release some fund for Unai.”
Wright did not hold back from blaming Stephan Lichtsteiner for the Liverpool loss. A tweet from the Gunners legend read, “If this was a crime scene Lichtsteiner’s fingerprints would be all over it.”
Lichtsteiner was signed last summer on a one-year contract and the 34-year-old was meant to do exactly what he is doing now, serve as a backup right-back to Hector Bellerin because clearly, Carl Jenkinson is not good enough.
Wright has always been concerned with Granit Xhaka’s inconsistencies and a lack of concentration on the pitch for Arsenal as well. He believes that the Swede could be a wonderful squad player but is nowhere close to being the guaranteed starter that he is today.
The £35m-worth Shkodran Mustafi is believed to be a waste of money by Ian Wright. Targeting the German’s defensive inadequacies, Wright sarcastically tweeted, “This is our first choice centre-half pairing.”
Otherwise, Wright is a fan of Aaron Ramsey but also supports the club’s decision in withdrawing their contract offer to the Welshman. He believes that the Gunners have suffered far too much in the past with dying player contracts and the club should take a firm stance in such a case.
