James McClean criticizes Declan Rice as overrated
James McClean recently stirred the pot by labelling Arsenal’s Declan Rice as “overrated,” suggesting the English media’s praise is unwarranted.
McClean’s candid remarks come despite Rice’s impressive performance stats since his transfer from West Ham last summer.
Rice has undeniably made a significant impact at Arsenal, leading his teammates in key metrics such as tackles, interceptions, and assists from set-pieces.
His pivotal role in the squad has translated to the international stage as well, where he’s accumulated 52 caps for England and started their last 13 major tournament matches.
In England’s recent 1-0 victory over Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener, Rice’s performance was commendable.
He completed a match-high 77 passes, created a chance, and maintained a 100% success rate for both dribbles and long passes, showcasing his versatility and skill on the field.
However, McClean, now with Wrexham, remains unconvinced. The former Ireland international, who once shared the pitch with Rice during his brief stint with the Republic of Ireland, voiced his opinion in an interview with RTE.
McClean argued that while Rice is a very good footballer, he falls short of being “world-class,” a term McClean reserves for players like Rodri or Toni Kroos, who he believes can dictate the flow of a game better than Rice.
“I think Declan Rice is overrated,” McClean on RTE.
“Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a very good footballer, but the way the English media wax lyrical about him is completely over the top.
“For me, he’s not world-class. To me, world-class is someone who gets in every side in the world. I don’t think he does that. I don’t think he gets in the Man City side ahead of Rodri. To me Toni Kroos is world-class, He dictates the game, Rodri dictates the game, I don’t think Declan Rice does that.”
McClean’s criticism seems to be fueled by a lingering resentment over Rice’s decision to switch allegiance to England in 2019.
Nonetheless, Rice appears focused and unfazed by the remarks, with his sights set on helping England secure another win against Denmark in Frankfurt on Thursday.
As the debate continues, Rice’s performances will ultimately speak for themselves, whether or not he meets McClean’s high standards.
