Jamie Carragher lauded Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres’ performance against Man City despite the striker’s continued lackluster performance against a formidable championship competitor.
Gyokeres found it difficult to make an impression against City’s strong defense on Sunday after having trouble in the loss to Liverpool earlier this month and in the victory at Manchester United in August. His three goals in two games against Nottingham Forest and struggling Leeds stand in sharp contrast to his lack of productivity.
Despite playing the entire 90 minutes, Gyokeres touched the ball just 24 times, which is fewer than any other player, and was unable to get a shot versus City at the Emirates. Carragher, however, sprang to Gyokeres’ defense, claiming that the striker is not the issue but rather his teammates.
“It was asked before the show, ‘Is Gyokeres the guy to win them the title?'” he stated on Sky Sports and his performances in the important road games have drawn some criticism.
Jamie Carragher makes controversial Arsenal claim
The Gunners strengthened their roster by acquiring Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Piero Hincapie, spending £255 million in the process.
Furthermore, after all of this expenditure, Carragher thinks Arsenal, not Liverpool, has the best team in England.
He stated, “I am surprised that Eze is not playing,” on Sky Sports prior to Arsenal’s matchup with Manchester City. This left-wing position isn’t the only one; Odegaard missed out on his opportunity to go inside as well.
I don’t think Gyokeres has had a chance in those three games, but he hasn’t gotten a kick today and may receive further criticism after the game. They haven’t given him any opportunity.
“So I return to the times when people say, ‘Arsenal’s difficulty is finishing,’ but it’s actually starting. They don’t make enough… they haven’t given him a single opportunity.”
