Jamie Carragher has hailed Arsenal’s decision to replace Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya as a “brave” move that now gives the club the Premier League’s best goalkeeper.

The former Liverpool defender made the comments on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, where he analysed Raya’s crucial role in Arsenal’s title push.

The Spanish shot-stopper produced a vital save against Mateus Fernandes during Sunday’s narrow win over West Ham, preserving a 1-0 victory that restored Arsenal’s five-point lead at the top.

“It wasn’t universally popular when the change was made,” Carragher admitted.

“I felt Arsenal needed to move on from Aaron Ramsdale. He was a good Premier League goalkeeper, but I just didn’t think they could win the league with him in goal.”

Arsenal signed Raya on an initial loan from Brentford in 2023, raising eyebrows after spending £30million on Ramsdale just two years earlier.

But the 30-year-old has silenced his doubters with outstanding consistency.

Carragher believes Raya now ranks among the world’s elite. “He’s the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and definitely one of the best in the world,” he said.

Raya has played every single minute of Arsenal’s 36 league matches this season.

He already has 18 clean sheets and looks set to win the Golden Glove for a third straight campaign – a feat that would underline his dominance.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised his goalkeeper’s latest heroics at the London Stadium.

“When you talk about magic moments, this is one of the most needed saves,” Arteta said. “He was incredible.”

Carragher also backed Arsenal to end their 22-year wait for the title, despite lingering nerves among fans.

“They’ve just got over that little wobble,” he said. “They haven’t looked nervous or edgy. I think they’ll win the league now.”
