Jamie Redknapp has suggested Mikel Arteta’s in-game management is limiting opportunities for Eberechi Eze, following Arsenal’s hard-fought 3-2 victory at Bournemouth.
“He’s Not That Expansive”: Redknapp on Arteta’s Eze Substitution Snub
The win extended the Gunners’ lead at the Premier League summit to six points.
After falling behind early to a sloppy defensive error, Arsenal rallied with defender Gabriel Magalhaes making amends with an equaliser.
A second-half brace from Declan Rice then sealed the comeback, despite a late Bournemouth consolation setting up a nervy finish.
The post-match discussion, however, shifted to Arteta’s substitutions and his £67.5 million summer signing.
Eze remained an unused substitute for the fourth consecutive league game, prompting analysis from Sky Sports pundit Redknapp.
He pointed to Arteta’s late introduction of defender Jonny Merino as evidence of a manager prioritising control over further attacking flair.
“He’s not looking around to bring on Eze or Myles Lewis-Skelly to go and win the game 4-2 or 5-2,” Redknapp stated.
“He’s thinking, ‘I want to keep hold of what I’ve got’.
That’s the sort of manager he is; I don’t think he’s going to be that expansive.”
In contrast, fellow pundit Paul Merson praised Arsenal’s formidable squad strength, likening the impact of Arteta’s substitutions to the legendary depth of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United teams.
He argued the quality from the bench allows Arsenal to physically and tactically grind opponents down as matches progress.
The comments highlight a growing narrative around Arteta’s handling of his star signing.
While the team continues to collect crucial points in the title race, questions persist over how and when the creative Eze will be integrated into Arteta’s tightly-controlled system.
