Jorginho is expected to sign with Flamengo, a Brazilian team, prior to the Club World Cup. When the season ends, the midfield player will depart Arsenal on a free transfer. An agreement has been reached for the 33-year-old to leave before the end of June, when his contract was originally scheduled to expire.
Jorginho will be able to join Flamengo in time for the June 14 start of the Club World Cup thanks to the deal. Two days later, Flamengo takes on Esperance de Tunis in their debut encounter. On June 20, they will travel to Philadelphia to play Chelsea, Jorginho’s old team.
Prior to joining Arsenal in January 2023, the Italian played with the Blues for four and a half years. He made 213 appearances for the team during that period, contributing eight assists and 29 goals. Along with Chelsea, Jorginho won four titles, including the Club World Cup and the Champions League.
Brazilian news outlets claim that Jorginho made a three-year commitment to Flamengo, remaining with the team until 2028. Transfer rumors have been sparked by the midfield player’s recent sightings in Rio de Janeiro. Flamengo also made an attempt to sign Jorginho during the January transfer window.
However, because they did not want to lose the seasoned midfield player in the middle of the season, Arsenal turned down their last-minute, desperate offer. Arteta would have liked to keep him on as a player during the title run.
“I have never played professionally in Brazil, so it would be an amazing experience for me,” Jorginho said in January when asked about the prospect of playing there. Of course, that door is also open. Make a composed judgment about what to do going forward and keep all options open.
Jorginho is recovering from a lung injury but could play again before the season ends. Either way, his imminent departure guarantees more midfield reshuffling at Arsenal.
Arsenal now look ahead to the upcoming frenetic transfer window and new challenge in the Premier League. Their own midfield is being transformed root and branch — and Jorginho’s departure is only the start.
