Klinsmann had his eye on Ozil

Hertha Berlin’s former boss Jurgen Klinsmann had wanted to get Mesut Ozil from Arsenal in the January 2020 transfer window. But that didn’t work out.

He was in charge of Hertha Berlin for 10 months and left the position on 11 February, by announcing on Facebook.

“We were on a good path and despite difficult games had moved six points away from the relegation spots. I am totally convinced that Hertha will stay up,” Klinsmann said in his statement.

“But for that task to be completed, as head coach I need the trust of all those involved. In the fight against relegation unity, solidarity and concentration are the key elements. If they are not guaranteed then I cannot deliver on my full potential as a coach and cannot live up to my responsibilities.”

However, that is no guarantee of Mesut Ozil staying, still.

“After this season I have one more year and after that I don’t know what will happen because I can’t see the future,” he told reporters during Arsenal’s training camp in Dubai.

“What I can do is give everything for the team, for myself, to be successful and let’s see what happens in the future.”

“We know it is a hard season for us, but we want to win games to take the points to be maybe at the end of the season in the top four,” he said.

“Our goal is to be in the Champions League. This year, we had difficult times, but I think we’re in a good way.

“In just the two months Mikel is here we improve a lot.”
