In a recent interview, French star Kylian Mbappe praised Arsenal’s William Saliba, calling him one of the best center-backs in the Premier League.
Saliba has quickly become a cornerstone for Mikel Arteta’s side, contributing significantly to the Gunners’ impressive back-to-back second-place finishes over the last two seasons.
The 23-year-old’s defensive prowess was on full display last season. Saliba led Arsenal in possessions won in both the middle and defensive thirds and ranked among the top three for clearances, headed clearances, and aerial duels won.
His stellar form helped Arsenal achieve the league’s best defensive record, conceding just 29 goals in 38 games and securing 18 clean sheets, a feat unmatched by any other team.
Mbappe, who will join Real Madrid this summer, didn’t hold back in his admiration for his compatriot. “This season, he has become a very important player for Arsenal and is among the best center-backs in the Premier League,”
Mbappe told Ouest-France via talkSPORT. “He is starting to get minutes with us. It’s now up to him to find his place. For me, he has all the qualities to, in time, be a starter with Les Bleus.”
Despite his Premier League dominance, Saliba has found it challenging to secure a regular starting spot in the French national team, earning just 15 caps so far.
French coach Didier Deschamps has been critical of his performances, noting inconsistencies. However, Mbappe’s endorsement could boost Saliba’s confidence as France embarks on their Euro 2024 campaign in Germany.
Their journey begins against Austria in Düsseldorf, with tough matches against the Netherlands and Poland also on the horizon.
As fans eagerly anticipate the tournament, Saliba will be looking to solidify his place in the national team, proving he is not just one of the Premier League’s finest but also a key player for Les Bleus.
