Arsenal have made their intentions for the summer clear after tabling an ambitious pre-window bid for Barcelona star Jules Koundé — but president Joan Laporta has wasted no time in issuing a firm response.
Joan Laporta Blocks Arsenal’s Attempt to Sign Jules Koundé
According to reports from Spain, Mikel Arteta has become “obsessed” with the French defender following Koundé’s stellar 2024/25 campaign under Hansi Flick.
The Gunners, keen to reinforce their backline with serious quality, offered Barcelona £55 million for the versatile defender, who earns around £223,000 per week.
However, Barcelona swiftly turned down the approach, with Laporta making it clear that Koundé remains a vital part of their plans.
The 26-year-old has been one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers this season, leading the squad in La Liga minutes played and contributing heavily at both ends of the pitch.
His ability to operate both as a centre-back and right-back has made him indispensable, especially as Barca chase another league title under Flick.
Arsenal’s push for a new defender comes as Kieran Tierney prepares to rejoin Celtic this summer, and Oleksandr Zinchenko finds himself on the transfer list after falling out of favour.
Jakub Kiwior has impressed in recent weeks, filling in for the injured Gabriel Magalhães, but Arteta clearly sees the need for more depth and quality heading into next season.
Despite the setback, Arsenal’s bold attempt to land Koundé underlines their intent to strengthen and build a squad capable of challenging for major honours.
As one of Europe’s top defensive talents, it’s no surprise Koundé is being closely watched by clubs beyond Spain — but Barcelona are standing firm, at least for now.
As France international teammate Dayot Upamecano recently put it: “He’s a confident player, a leader, and he’s gaining a lot of experience. I wish him all the best.”
Whether Arsenal return with an improved offer remains to be seen — but for now, Koundé is staying put at Camp Nou.
