Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas and director of football Vincent Ponsot both reaffirmed plans to re-sign Alexandre Lacazette this summer during a news conference this week.
Lyon’s goal for the summer transfer window is Lacazette, but their anticipated absence from Europe next season makes that more difficult.
“If we need to make compromises to get him, we will,” Aulas said, with Ponsot adding: “We will continue until the end, it’s a desire for us [to bring Lacazette back].”
As a result, Lyon has begun to look into alternative targets, including speaking with Breel Embolo officials from Borussia Monchengladbach.
Mikel Arteta has already stated that Arsenal will explore the possibility of extending Lacazette’s contract at the conclusion of the season, with sources claiming that the club might give a new one-year deal with the option to extend for another season.
However, such reports were made before Eddie Nketiah burst into the starting lineup and scored four goals in six games.
If the Gunners were to push for one of them now, Nketiah would seem to be the favourite.
Even if he does not end up with Lyon, Lacazette stated in April that he is in talks with a number of other new teams.
