Karim Benzema was heavily linked with Arsenal in 2014.

The Gunners held a strong interest in Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in 2014 as Madrid was interested in signing Luis Suarez from Liverpool.

Suarez who bagged 31 goals and 17 assists in just 33 Premier League games that season was also linked with a move to the Emirates.

But the move to Real Madrid fell through due to Suarez’s infamous bite on Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup.

Suarez eventually secured his move to Barcelona for a reported £65m fee where he continued his dream goalscoring form.

The infamous biting incident made Los Blancos rethink their approach for the Uruguayan international and decided to not sell Karim Benzema to Arsenal.

Suarez said: “Before the 2014 World Cup, Real Madrid wanted to sign me, and everything was on track.

“They were planning to sell Benzema to Arsenal – it was all done. When the World Cup started, Barcelona joined the race and obviously I preferred Barca.

“With the bite situation, Madrid lowered their interest and Barca became more interested despite the punishment. I will always be grateful for that. In the end I had both options and I chose Barcelona because it was my dream.”
