Arsenal could lose Lucas Torreira after only two years into signing him.
Mikel Arteta has made it clear the direction he wants to go in and unfortunately, Torreira does not seem to be an ideal fit.
The 24-year-old’s skill set seems to be a mismatch when it comes to rotating the squad around and building up the team’s attack. While his quality on the pitch is undeniable, he might not be the right option for Arsenal at this moment. Fans still adore the former Sampdoria man, calling to see him more in crucial ties.
While Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka carried out impressive displays since the restart, Torreira filled in mostly as a substitute in later stages of games. Arsenal are still uncertain about retaining Ceballos on a year-long loan deal but they are looking at more reinforcements. The likes of Thomas Partey, Houssem Auoar, Philippe Coutinho and Marc Roca are high on their shortlist for the summer.
Torreira have taken time to settle in at London since his move to the Serie A, perhaps, not even doing so fully. He has faced issues this season, in terms of injuries, losing his starting spot and coming into a clash with former manager, Unai Emery. Several teams in Italy want to bring him back and Torreira revealed that he might be open to the move.
“I have a contract with the club and I have to respect it, obviously, if I have to leave it will be for the best,” Torreira told radio station Sport 980 as quoted by the Mail. Arsenal signed him for £26 million and can make a healthy profit on him, given his contract is due to run till June 2023.
