A loan move to Atletico Madrid has not worked out as he would have hoped, failing to break into Diego Simeone’s squad as a regular.
Thomas Partey moved the opposite way last summer even though in a completely seperate deal. Mikel Arteta wanted more creativity and dynamism in his midfield which Torreira failed to provide. He is more of a defensive stopper, best capable of playing in a pivot.
The form that the 24-year-old showed in his debut season with Arsenal did not translate under Arteta or Simeone. Atletico never had a buy-back clause in place so they are not compelled to sign him anyway. It is quite clear that Torreira has no place under the current Gunners boss and could be shipped out again.
Good news is there is significant interest from the Serie A for Torreira. He made his name in the Italian top-flight with Sampdoria and could head back there soon. Torino, AC Milan and Fiorentina are all interested in signing but whether on a loan or permanently has not been confirmed yet.
Torreira’s agent revealed that the player still believes he has a future in Spain. The next two months will be crucial in how his immediate future turns out. If he impresses Simeone, he might be kept or sent back to Arsenal only to be found a different suitor in January.
