Fiorentina are reportedly preparing a £24m package to sign the midfielder this summer. An initial £8m fee is to be paid for his loan deal and the rest when the season is over.
This is not an ideal scenario for Arsenal but the are forced to make compromises due to the implications of COVID-19. Like them, not many clubs are flush with cash right now. That means it is significantly difficult to reduce your overflowing senior roster, let alone get what your demand for them.
In an usual scenario, Torreira could easily be worth upwards of £40m, handing Arsenal a neat profit after arriving here in 2018. But with the lack of regular game time, Fiorentina knows how little he is worth to head coach, Mikel Arteta. Torreira also had difficulty settling into life in England right from the start.
There was speculation of him returning to Italy after only one year with the Gunners. He decided to stay and saw his gametime drastically reduce under both Unai Emery and Arteta. While the Uruguayan international, packs plenty of talent under his boots, he simply does not fit the mould of player Arteta wants. Reinvesting his transfer fee on newer signings would be an appropriate way to move forward.
