Arsenal are reportedly trying to freeze Mesut Ozil out of the squad before selling him this summer.
The German’s mammoth contract still has one year left and it would be best to get rid of it as soon as possible, just like Henrik Mkhitaryan’s.
Arsenal could not come to an agreement with AS Roma over a transfer fee for Mkhitaryan and hence, decided to let him walk for nothing. Ozil could face a similar treatment after bringing little to no impact on the pitch. He was not a popular face under Unai Emery and that has quickly become the case under Mikel Arteta as well.
The 31-year-old has not featured in a single game since the restart, only being named three times as a substitute. This clearly indicates issues at a deeper level than just a problem with his back. Ozil even returned to full training this past week only to be left out of the Manchester City and Aston Villa game completely.
Arsenal are clearly taking extreme measures to phase Ozil out of the club. While the German is happy to stay and collect his tidy paycheques, making it difficult for him might change his mind. Arteta also will find it difficult to squeeze Ozil into his current setup of a three-man backline.
