Michael Owen believes Arsenal remain unconvinced by Viktor Gyokeres and will move for a world-class forward this summer if the opportunity arises.
Michael Owen: Arsenal ‘Not Happy’ with Viktor Gyokeres and Will Seek New Striker
The former Liverpool and England striker claims the Premier League champions are dissatisfied with the Swedish striker’s overall contribution, despite his 21 goals in 54 appearances during his debut season at the Emirates.
Arsenal signed Gyokeres from Sporting CP for £64 million last summer, but the 27-year-old has faced persistent criticism over his technical ability, playing style, and performances in high-stakes matches.
“Arsenal would love to find another centre-forward – they’re not happy with Gyokeres really,” Owen told Premier League Productions.
“They’re not happy with a couple of positions.”
Owen added that if a truly elite attacker someone in the mould of Thierry Henry becomes available, Arsenal “would move heaven and earth” to secure that signing.
The Gunners secured their first Premier League title in 22 years this season, finishing seven points clear of Manchester City.
Owen believes Mikel Arteta will not hesitate to strengthen further, though he warned against spending recklessly.
“They’ve got to be careful, like a Liverpool, spending £400 million over a summer trying to be even better again, and they ruin what they’ve got,” Owen said.
“That’s the risk, that’s the management, that’s the next stage.”
The pundit also suggested Arsenal’s playing style could evolve next season.
While admitting they are “not the greatest of watches”, Owen backed Arteta’s side to retain their title, pointing to turmoil at Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
“A lot of the top teams are struggling at the moment,” Owen said.
“There is an opportunity for Arsenal… It could be theirs for the immediate future.”
