Nicolas Pepe was let go by Arsenal, according to Mikel Arteta, because “when things aren’t working, you have to move on”
After the Gunners cancelled Pepe’s contract, he last week left for Turkish club Trabzonspor.
Just four years after moving to the Emirates Stadium for a then-club-record fee of £72 million, the winger became the eighth Arsenal player to meet that destiny in recent seasons.
Pepe’s contract was terminated, and Arteta has supported the decision, noting that it was not the Ivorian’s fault that he had to deal with the pressure of a hefty price tag.
Not only Pepe, but center-back Rob Holding also completed a trade to London rivals Crystal Palace in the final hours of the summer transfer season. Arteta responded, “Yes, but obviously there are moments for players. I am unhappy that Pepe’s time at Arsenal never worked out.
The next game for Arsenal, who have started the season unblemished, is on Sunday when they travel to take on Everton. At Goodison Park, the Gunners have a dismal record and have not experienced victory there since 2017, when Arsene Wenger was still in command.
