Mikel Arteta Addresses Mourinho Comparisons Amid Team News Criticism

Jose Mourinho revealed he was never in contact with Arsenal about coaching position

The Gunners’ boss faced scrutiny after creating uncertainty regarding the availability of Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber ahead of the thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool, only for both players to start, with Saka even scoring the opener.

In his defense, Arteta explained that his approach is about keeping opponents on their toes.

“That’s my job,” he stated, emphasizing that he prefers to keep his strategies under wraps.

“Sometimes I don’t know if a player will be fit in two days’ time when we do the press conference. I want to make it challenging for the opposition. They should prepare just like we do.”

Jamie Carragher’s remarks likened Arteta’s tactics to those of Mourinho, suggesting that Arteta is evolving into a more pragmatic manager rather than sticking strictly to the attacking philosophies of his former mentor, Pep Guardiola.

However, Arteta took these comparisons in stride, expressing respect for Mourinho’s successful career.

“I don’t like comparing myself to anybody. I do things I believe are best for the team,” he said, highlighting his commitment to his unique coaching style.

As Arsenal gears up for their Carabao Cup clash against Preston, Arteta acknowledged injury concerns but remained optimistic.

With several players sidelined, including Martin Odegaard and Kieran Tierney, he’s ready to give opportunities to younger players.

“It’s not about age; it’s about merit,” Arteta affirmed, showcasing his belief in rewarding players based on their performances and commitment.
