Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal fans could see Bukayo Saka feature in a new position more frequently after the young star impressed in an unfamiliar midfield role during the FA Cup victory over Wigan.

Arteta Reveals Saka Could Feature in Midfield More Often

The England international was a late addition to the starting lineup for the third-round tie.

Rather than replacing winger Noni Madueke, Arteta found a way to accommodate both players by deploying Saka in a central midfield berth.

The tactical tweak caught many supporters off guard, but the decision paid immediate dividends.

Saka adapted seamlessly to the deeper-lying role, showcasing his technical quality and intelligence to help the Gunners secure a win and progress to the next round.

His performance offered a glimpse of how Arsenal might evolve their setup during a busy season that still holds promise of silverware.

Speaking to Arsenal Media after the match, Arteta opened the door to using the Hale End graduate in that position more often.

The Spaniard explained that the move allows Saka to get on the ball in more dangerous areas, making him harder for opponents to track.

“That’s something that’s a possibility,” Arteta said.

“I wanted to try it, and we might use it in the future. There are still so many games, competitions and different scenarios to play in this season, and that’s a possibility that we have.

He’s more central, he’s closer to the goal. It’s a bit more difficult for the opponent to get his reference constantly.

He can interchange positions with a wide player as well, and he’s so good at picking those spaces. When he’s there, he can really hurt you with the ball.”

The versatility on display against Wigan highlights the tactical flexibility within Arteta’s squad.

By utilising Saka’s spatial awareness and dribbling ability in the middle of the park, Arsenal gain another dimension in attack.

For the player himself, the ability to operate in multiple roles only strengthens his importance to a side chasing trophies on multiple fronts.

With the FA Cup representing a realistic path to glory, Saka will be eager to play a decisive role wherever he lines up.
