Mikel Arteta hits out at the officials on denying two penalties

Arteta was left fuming at the officials post-match.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta looked unhappy with the officials who were in charge of Arsenal’s game against Newcastle United. He has argued that his side should have been given two penalties.

Arsenal and Newcastle United played out a goalless draw on Tuesday night. The North London club dropped two points but still, they are at the top of the table.

The Gunners made a good start but they faded as the game went on and they struggled to break down a dogged Magpies side. Both sides shared points in the end.

Arteta was left fuming at the officials post-match as he felt that Arsenal should have been awarded two penalties. One for an apparent foul by Dan Burn on Gabriel and the other for a handball by Jacob Murphy.

“Extremely proud of my players. The way we played, dominated the game, tried and continued to control the game. We needed that spark in the final third. We had so many situations. And when had two scandalous penalties,” Arteta spoke to Sky Sports.

“There were two penalties. It’s very simple. I’m talking about what I’ve seen. It was two scandalous penalties. I’m so proud of the work we have done.

“I think we lacked an extra touch or movement to finish these chances in this game.

“Newcastle wanted to set-up like this. It is not the way they play. They have not set-up like this against anyone else.

“When you cannot win you cannot lose and we kept a clean sheet and had a really good performance. Now we go again. I wanted to win the game are we drew it. We should have done some things better in the final third and we should have had two penalties to win the game.”

On his options from the bench and transfers: “We had what we had. We have some injuries as well and attacking areas we don’t have that many options but it is what it is. That’s something we always try to do to improve our team and every window is important.”

Man City will close in to within five points of Arsenal if they beat Chelsea on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Newcastle still takes the third spot and they are now level on points with Man Utd after they beat Bournemouth last night.
