Arteta pointed to Arsenal’s growing maturity as key factor for title race

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has bluntly insisted his team’s nine-point advantage at the Premier League summit means “nothing” as they chase a first title in two decades.

The Gunners solidified their position with a 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

With second-place Manchester City facing a tough trip to Liverpool on Sunday, the gap could temporarily widen further.

However, Arteta immediately shifted focus from the table, emphasizing the long road ahead.

“Nothing,” he told reporters when asked about the lead’s significance.

“We still have to win so many games to achieve what we want.”

He stressed the importance of continual improvement, adding,

“Let’s not focus on that… we’ve done our job now. We assess that, try to improve it and get ready for Brentford [on Thursday].”

Arteta reserved praise for two-goal striker Viktor Gyokeres, highlighting the forward’s character and consistency.

“I love his character, the way he approaches every single day,” Arteta said.

“What really makes a difference is the consistency that he shows.”

The manager also countered recent domestic criticism of Arsenal’s style, claiming European observers hold a different view.

“I hear completely the opposite: all around Europe that we are the most exciting team in Europe,” he stated.

When questioned on the disparity, Arteta responded with dry humor, asking for the contact details of his detractors.

Despite a recent setback against Manchester United, Arteta expressed confidence in the supporters’ backing for the crucial final months.

“I expect the crowd, like it’s been all season, with us,” he declared, with Arsenal also progressing in cup competitions.

For Arteta, the only focus remains the next challenge, not the current points cushion.
