Although Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, has confidence in the team’s current crop of strikers, he conceded that the Gunners have struggled to score goals this season

In the recent north London derby stalemate with Tottenham Hotspur, both Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus received criticism for their lacklustre performances. However, top scorer Bukayo Saka ultimately delivered yet again.

Nketiah has scored twice so far this season while normal starter Jesus has only scored once, and Arteta acknowledged that his team hasn’t performed at their best.

We are scoring goals, he remarked, adding that there are plenty different ways to do it. But given the opportunities we created, we ought to have scored a lot more.

As part of their effort to win the Premier League, Arsenal is reportedly open to signing a new striker. Ivan Toney of Brentford is being pursued by a number of teams, including the Gunners and Chelsea. However, Arteta made an effort to support Jesus and Nketiah and emphasised that a new signing is not currently being considered.

We’re not even thinking about that, Arteta said. “Up front, we have several pretty strong players. Yes, we do have some injuries right now. We’ll carry on with the players we have right now. When asked if the idea of a conventional striker was vanishing from football, Arteta did mention Toney as evidence that pure goal scorers are still successful in the present.
