Mikel Arteta pinpoints Arsenal’s title race turning point
In season final press conference, Mikel Arteta has pinpointed Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa last month as the pivotal moment that dashed their Premier League title hopes.
Despite a valiant effort until the season’s final whistle, the Gunners fell short in their pursuit of Manchester City, who clinched their fourth consecutive title.
Arteta’s side wrapped up the campaign with a convincing victory over Everton, but it was insufficient to close the gap on City, who edged out a win against West Ham to finish two points clear.
The Arsenal manager, though disappointed, praised his squad for their relentless pursuit and resilience throughout the season.
“We pushed every limit,” Arteta remarked, reflecting on the intense competition.
“For sure Villa at home,” he named as the turning point. “In the first half it should have been 4-0. For what happened on Tuesday [Man City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham], maybe it could have been as well. These are the margins.
“The staff and players have pushed every limit and every margin that we could to win the Premier League. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough.
“Congrats to City. It’s unbelievable what they’ve done since December. Every performance has been at the highest we’ve ever seen and still it wasn’t enough.”
He showed the significance of the Aston Villa defeat, acknowledging that it marked the turning point in their title challenge. Yet, his message to the fans remained optimistic and forward-looking.
Addressing the supporters at the Emirates, Arteta expressed gratitude and urged them to continue their passionate support.
“Now it’s time to reflect and recharge,” he said.
“Please keep pushing and inspiring this team. We want much more. We’ll come back stronger, hungrier, and ready to fight for everything.”
Arteta’s heartfelt words resonated with fans, promising a future of renewed determination and ambition for the Gunners.
